I have always been interested in homeopathy, aromatherapy & alternative medicine and my daughter Laura and I have traditionally erred on this side for health and well being, even from when she was very small. 

When I travelled a lot internationally with work, if I needed any type of medication it had to be easy to take with me and to have the ability to help myself. ….. hence my reliance on homeopathy and alternative medicine.

I was very fortunate to be introduced to dōTERRA Essential Oils a few years ago. I could not believe the ability of all the oils to have multiple uses including emotional support and use in cooking, beauty and cleaning to help reduce toxic load.

I am now a passionate advocate of essential oils, so have put together this website as an introduction for others to their wonderful benefits, to show the path you can follow to learn more about the oils, which I can truly say have transformed my life.

What are pure essential oils?

Essential oils are the volatile liquids that are distilled from plants, including their respective parts, such as seeds, bark, leaves, stems, roots, flowers, fruit, etc.  They come from the immune systems of the plants.  One of the factors that determine the purity and therapeutic value of essential oils is its chemical constituents. 

As we begin to understand the power of essential oils in the realm of personal holistic health care, we comprehend the absolute necessity of obtaining pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. 

Those who are beginning their journey into the realm of aromatherapy and essential oils must actively seek for the purest quality and highest therapeutic-grade oils available..  Anything less than pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils may not produce the desired results and can, in some cases, be extremely toxic. Why is it so difficult to find pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils?

Producing the purest of oils can be very costly because it may require several hundred pounds, or even several thousand pounds, of plant material to extract one pound of pure essential oil. Because the vast majority of all the oils produced in the world today are used by the perfume industry, the oils are being purchased for their aromatic qualities only.  Unnecessary high pressure and high temperature, rapid processing, and the use of chemical solvents are often employed during the distillation process so that a greater quantity of oil can be produced at a faster rate.  These oils may smell just as good and cost much less, but they will lack most, if not all, the chemical constituents necessary to produce the expected therapeutic results. Benefits of pure therapeutic-grade essential oils

Essential oils embody the regenerating, protective, and immune-strengthening properties of plants.  Essential oil constituents are both small in molecular size and are also lipid soluble, allowing many of them to easily and quickly penetrate the skin..

The lipid solubility of essential oil components allows the oil constituents to penetrate cell membranes, even if these membranes have hardened because of oxygen deficiency.

In fact, essential oil constituents have the potential to affect every cell of the body within 20 minutes and then be metabolised like other nutrients. (1)

How do I use pure essential oils?

Pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils can be used in three principal ways, which are summarised below. 

Safety Please note carefully that only pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils should be used for internal consumption - subject to safety guidelines dependent on the specific oil, and the intended recipient.  Other essential oils on the market may be diluted or processed with harmful chemicals. (1)

Aromatically

Aromatic application of essential oils involves either inhaling a fine mist of the oil, or a vapour of volatile aromatic components that have been evaporated from the oil.

Internally

Internal use is the process of infusing or otherwise internalising an essential oil into the body. Only pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils should be used for internal consumption, as other essential oils on the market may be diluted or processed using harmful chemicals. 

The US Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) has approved some essential oils generically for internal use, and gives them the following designations: GRAS (Generally Recognised As Safe for human consumption, or FL (Flavouring Agent). 

These designations are listed for each oil that is safe for human consumption in the Single Essential Oils section of the Modern Essentials book under Oral Use As Dietary Supplement. Oils without this designation should never be used internally without first consulting a certified health care professional.(1) 

In other countries around the world, the relevant government regulatory agency have their own similar regulations regarding the internal use of essential oils. (1)

Topically

Topical application is the process of placing an essential oil on the skin, hair, mouth, teeth, nails or mucous membranes of the body, Applying essential oils directly on the body without any kind of dilution is commonly referred to as applying the oil "neat". 

Since essential oils are so potent, and because some essential oils may irritate the skin, or other areas of the body, they are often diluted with a pure vegetable oil (usually called a "carrier oil") such as fractionated coconut oil,  almond oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, etc. Several topical application methods are possible. 

Direct application is applying the oils directly on the area of concern. Because essential ols are so potent, more is not necessarily better. To achieve the desired result, 1-3 drops of oil are normally adequate.(1)

To help you learn more about essential oils, we run Intro To Essential Oils classes, either as live classes, or possibly as a custom live class set up for you and a group of your friends. Alternatively, we run online webinars where you can simply log in to the virtual classroom from your own home, and watch and participate in the class online.

We currently hold live essential oil classes in the South of England, usually in Hampshire or Surrey. Through my network of dōTERRA colleagues, I can also usually arrange for you to attend a live class elsewhere in the UK.
